1930s Gold Plated Spider Brooch
Art Deco spider brooch crafted in gold plated brass, beautifully detailed with hand finished workmanship. The eight legs feature hammered and chiseled texturing along the upper surfaces, creating a segmented, lifelike appearance, while the undersides remain smooth, a characteristic technique seen in early 20th century European costume jewellery.
The spider’s body is formed from a luminous oval cabochon in soft purple glass, glowing with subtle depth and variation in tone. The head is set with a faceted purple glass stone, while two vivid red glass stones form the eyes, giving the piece a bold and slightly whimsical expression. The contrast between the rich purple hues and the red accents creates a dramatic eye catching design.
Insect jewellery was highly fashionable from the late Victorian period through the Art Deco era and Bohemian workshops at that time were especially known for their colourful glass and textured brass work. This brooch is a wonderful example of that tradition, bold, decorative and full of character.
