Arc Telescopic Floor Lamp with Carrara Marble Base, 1970s

A striking 1970s Italian Space Age Arc Floor Lamp, distinguished by its sweeping architectural form, substantial Carrara marble base and generously proportioned domed shade.
 
The lamp rests on an exceptionally heavy, low profile circular base in white Carrara marble, measuring 38cm in diameter and 6cm high. The marble is naturally veined in soft shades of white and grey, giving the otherwise minimalist base a distinctive character and providing an elegant contrast to the polished chromed steel structure.
 
Rising from the marble base, the long chromed steel stem sweeps outward in a graceful arc and incorporates a telescopic adjustment mechanism, allowing the position of the shade to be altered considerably. The lamp extends from 104cm to 172cm in horizontal reach, measured from the base to the shade, while reaching approximately 178 cm at its highest setting.
 
The large domed Shade measures 43cm in diameter by 25.5cm high. It combines a softly diffusing milky white Perspex diffuser with polished chrome detailing. The combination of luminous white shade, reflective chrome and white marble gives the lamp a distinctly futuristic and sculptural presence.
 
The generous arc allows the shade to project well beyond the footprint of the marble base, making the lamp particularly effective positioned beside a sofa or lounge chair, or used to illuminate a dining or seating area.
 
With its sweeping chrome structure, oversized domed shade, adjustable telescopic mechanism and luxurious marble base, the lamp embodies the Space Age aesthetic associated with Italian lighting of the 1960s and 1970s. Its design language is reminiscent of the experimental work produced by manufacturers and designers such as Harvey Guzzini and Goffredo Reggiani, although no specific attribution is being made.
 
A highly decorative statement piece, equally suited to an Italian modernist, Space Age, MidCentury inspired or contemporary interior. Its impressive scale and combination of materials make it as much a sculptural furnishing as it is a functional light.
