Beetle Brooch 1940s
A delightful American figural beetle brooch dating from the late 1940s, beautifully crafted in gold plated metal with a domed body lavishly pavé set with sparkling clear rhinestones. The shell is highlighted with vibrant red, green and blue faceted crystal accents, while finely modelled legs and antennae complete the naturalistic design. The reverse features a well finished cast construction with the textured pattern characteristic of the period, retaining its original rich gold plated finish and fitted with a secure roll over safety clasp.
Inspired by a long tradition of insect jewellery dating back centuries, this charming beetle brooch reflects the enduring popularity of nature inspired design. As costume jewellery flourished during the first half of the 20th century, American manufacturers continued this tradition, producing an imaginative range of figural insect brooches in a wide variety of styles and materials. Pavé set rhinestone examples such as this represent some of the most elegant and glamorous interpretations of the theme.
Although unsigned, this brooch exhibits the quality of construction and styling associated with well made costume jewellery of the period. Throughout the 20th century, many renowned manufacturers and ateliers produced jewellery not only under their own names but also on behalf of department stores, fashion houses and other retailers. As a result, numerous beautifully crafted pieces survive today without a maker's mark.
