Daisy Flower Brooch by Coro

Daisy Flower Brooch by Coro

This sculptural floral brooch by Coro is designed as a stylised daisy, rendered with softly contoured white enamel petals delicately shaded with pale yellow radiating from the centre. A single costume pearl forms the pistil, creating depth and gentle contrast against the luminous enamel surface. The blossom is complemented by a slender, naturalistic branch element extending behind the flower, finished in gold plated metal and accented with a yellow enamelled leaf.

The brooch is executed in gold plated alloy and bears the cursive Coro signature without a copyright symbol, a marking used between 1919 and 1955. The refined enamel work, dimensional construction and balanced composition place this example most convincingly in the middle 1930s to early 1940s, a period widely regarded as Coro’s golden age of design.

While Coro is best known for its large scale costume jewellery production, the firm also introduced a high end line in 1933 under the François name, created for a more affluent clientele. Designs associated with François were distinguished by elevated materials, painterly enamelling and sculptural floral forms. An identical example of this brooch bearing the François signature confirms the design as originating from the François design studio, with this example produced by Coro and marketed under the company’s principal brand. The design is likely to have been realised under the artistic direction of Coro’s chief designer Gene Verrecchio.

The François line was famously promoted as an Enamelled Flower Garden, described in period advertising as jewellery that bloomed eternally, required no care and captured the charm of fine flowers without their fragility. Although the success of the François line was curtailed during the Second World War, it remains one of the most admired chapters in Coro’s history and was later succeeded by the Vendôme line as the company’s premier offering.

This brooch is a beautifully preserved example of American costume jewellery, combining artistry, technical skill and enduring elegance. The realistic floral modelling, subtle enamel shading and harmonious proportions reflect the high standard of Coro’s late interwar and early wartime production, when botanical motifs were rendered with increasing sophistication and refinement.
