Italian Spherical Pendant Light

A highly unusual Italian pendant light dating from the 1950s/60s, distinguished by its substantial spherical form, contrasting brass detailing and extensive decoration in faceted Aurora Borealis crystal.

The large rounded shade is finished in cream coloured lacquered metal and is encircled at its equator by a polished brass ring, set slightly away from the surface of the sphere, giving the pendant a distinctive celestial, almost planetary appearance reminiscent of Saturn. The lower hemisphere is inset with numerous individually faceted iridescent glass crystals, arranged across the curved surface.

The crystals display the characteristic Aurora Borealis effect, shifting through shades of blue, violet, pink, amber and gold as they catch the light. Against the restrained cream metal and warm brass, they give the pendant a particularly jewel like and atmospheric quality.

The lower hemisphere terminates in a wide circular opening through which the light is emitted downward. When illuminated, the individual faceted crystals become points of shimmering colour across the surface of the shade.
 
The pendant is suspended by a steel cable, with the electrical wire running parallel to it, contributing to the distinctive architectural appearance of the design and connecting to a brass ceiling rose.

The combination of the spherical silhouette, equatorial brass ring and sparkling iridescent glass is characteristic of the futuristic vocabulary of Italian Space Age lighting of the era, while the unusual use of faceted crystal gives the piece a more decorative and luxurious character.
